Correspondence, receipts, and other official papers re the Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina. Includes invitations to speak at lodges and lay cornerstones, district reports on the financial and physical conditions of various lodges, and questions involving particulars of Masonic law. Items of interest include circular letter, 6 Mar. 1878, severing ties between Grand Lodge of Ancient and Accepted Masons of England and Grand Orient of France due to religious differences over "a belief in the existence of T[he] G[rand] A[rchitect] O[f] T[he] U[niverse]"; document, 8 Jan. 1899, giving instructions for preparations of a Masonic Hall for a "Lodge of Sorrow" following the death of a Brother; letter, 17 Sept. 1900, from Zimmerman Davis, Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of S.C., commending Sheppard on issuing a "call for help for our brethren in Galveston", [Tx.], following the 8 Sept. 1900 hurricane. Letter, 25 Mar . 1901, from George B. Lake re his trip to Washington, D.C., on McKinley's inauguration day; letter, 5 Apr. 1901, from Furman Smith, District Deputy Grand Master of Masons for the 7th District of S.C., re a visit to Iva (Anderson County, S.C.), and donation by Lodge 233 to the Galveston hurricane fund; letter, 30 Nov. 1918, from Charles H. Callahan, Alexandria, Va., certifying that the box and gavel presented to the Grand Lodge of S.C. on 10 Dec. 1918 was constructed of wood from Mt. Vernon and neighboring Belvoir, home of William Fairfax, and a bedstead used by both George Washington and Robert E. Lee. Correspondents include Jacob T. Lieutenant Colonel Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886) of the 1st Artillery Regiment of the South Carolina Militia, which was later absorbed into the Army of the Confederate States of America, commanded Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, December 1860-January 1861, and artillery at Morris Island, March-April 1861, in the harbor of Charleston, S.C.
